The Hand Squeeze Test! - Is this an acceptable way to measure the characteristics of a granulation?
This machine may be available immediately from stock – click here for more details
1. How do you compare two similar granulations?
2. How do you describe a granulation?
3. How do you measure the properties of a wet mass?
The Mixer Torque Rheometer can give a numerical measure of “consistency”expressed as a number
This is to give a quantitative description to the wet mass. You can download a small information sheet here
The MTR-3 has been designed to enable the user to quantify the rheological properties (consistency) of a wet mass. The MTR is an invaluable formulation development, formulation research and production quality control tool.
How does it work?
The MTR comprises a mixing bowl containing two horizontal, contra-rotating mixing blades. The secondary blade rotates at twice the speed of the primary blade. Since the bowl pivots about the primary drive shaft, the action of mixing a wet powder mass generates a torque which is directly related to the consistency of the wet powder mass in the bowl. The instrument is programmed via the PC to mix the wet powder mass for user-defined time periods and can also be programmed to prompt for binder additions.
How can the Caleva MTR improve upon the ‘hand squeeze’ test?
- by providing quantitative data on the rheological characteristics of granulations
- by generating reproducible figures that can be incorporated into formulation development and production quality control saving both time and money
- by providing data which can be used to develop a scale up strategy
- by providing an instrument which can be used for quality control in production
Why is the binder ratio important?
- the amount of binder added to powder to make the wet mass, together with the mixing time, affects the final characteristics and performance of pharmaceutical formulations
- optimization of formulations can be achieved with maximum possible efficiency before spheronization or further processes are undertaken

Scalable Room‐Temperature Conversion of Copper (II) Hydroxide into HKUST‐1 (Cu3 (btc) 2)
G Majano, J Pérez‐Ramírez - Advanced Materials, 2012
A total of 284 g of pure HKUST-1 were recovered after 1 day. Extrusion of materials was carried out on a Caleva Mini Screw Extruder with a 2 mm die after mixture optimization with water in a Caleva Mixer Torque Rheometer 3. The final extrudates were dried at 65 ° C overnight. ...
